Theatre/Drag
Stag King
Half man, half stag, and halfcut most of the time.
Queer artist Liberty Martin and the Ancient Celtic god of the hunt met at an online drag workshop in 2020. The Stag King is half man, half stag, and halfcut most of the time since his business collapsed AGAIN.
This performance lecture / drag show explores the varied nature of Stag King's professional roles, including: Revered God, Stag Night Entertainer and, most recently, Drag King. This is a show about how we survive and find meaning in our lives while many established sources of identity disappear. As automation has the potential to rule out whole professions and a rapidly changing climate threatens our existence, what can we learn from a sexy cervitaur whose working life peaked in the palaeolithic era?
Liberty Martin has made work for and performed at festivals and venues including Latitude, Amanda Wilkinson Gallery, La MaMa NY & FRIEZE London. Liberty made their digital drag debut as Ishmael Gaze at La MaMa Love Cabaret in 2021, and recently wrote the text for M.E.H, a performance exploring the diagnosis of ‘hysteria’ using physical theatre, drag and magic.
★★★★ "...intellectual and hilarious feminist histories” - The List, on M.E.H
★★★★★ "It made my laugh. It made me cry. And it gave me hope. A gloriously silly and clever delve into knowing who we are" Audience review, Stag King
